Is skin bleaching common amongst western born ethnic women?

Ayan, 29: “The reason sounds really stupid now. I did it for the first time around six years ago. I was getting ready to get married to a man and he ended up leaving me for someone else. It’s stupid, but I thought he left because I wasn’t light enough.”

I'm not sure about millennial but Gen-z Diaspora Somalis dont bleach their skin. We are lucky to be born in an era where the media we consume celebrates all types of skin tones. Colorism isn't that much of struggle for us compared to the older generations.

Upbringing & Age is the biggest factor. I highly doubt anyone in their mid twenties or younger has ever considered skin bleaching. That's more of a middle aged mother thing, although I've seen considerable women in their 20s who wear makeup 4 shades lighter than them. They just aren't stupid enough to risk skin cancer.
