Is there a reason why my genetic distances to ancient samples are so far? (illustrativeDNA)

Now, I could be entirely misunderstanding how this all works, but I swear with so many other results I see people have distances in the 3-4 range, for their very closest ancient samples (although many of the results I've seen are European/Anglo/White of some kind, so maybe there's some correlation there). But yeah, I'm wondering what gives? Could it just be because they have more samples or something? I have zero speculation to even put forward.

Are your closest ancient samples about as distant as mine? For the closest sample on my list to be at 14.5~ meanwhile some people's closest are almost 4 times less than that is stunning lmao. There's probably all sorts of reasons why, but I'm totally ignorant. Any ideas would be great!

Sorry if this is a stupid question also btw. Thanks!

You know what, I think I answered my own question. I think it's just IllustrativeDNA in general. I think they're more geared towards white/MENA (what have you) people.

I've noticed East Africans are quite far from each other, like a Brit will have 5 ethnicities within the same range a Somali would have to their next closest match, so it's probably related to that.

our cultures are as far apart as one another so it’s not a surprise that we’re genetically distant . Could religion have played a part into this too don’t know .

I looked at your result second time, I noticed your result is not average somali. Your closer to East African than Cushitic, Are you from Somalia? If so, maybe you mixed with yemani or East African and somali?

Here's my results. My result is slightly off average somali but still it shows that I am almost full Somali.

Oh yeah, I should have clarified, sorry. I’m South Sudanese, Acholi specifically. And see, this is why I’m so lost lol. My closest sample is a distance of 14.5~, whilst yours is 5~. So much closer, do you have any theories about why mine are so distant to me? I would have expected those first few ones to be way closer, hell, even the Nilotic. Which, ironically, is slightly closer to you than it even is to me lol. Like wth haha.

Hahah you’re all good girl! It’s totally understandable lol. And that’s really nice to hear. I love Somali music also, something about the language is just so pleasant sounding to me.

:mjcry: :friendhug: you are so nice sis.
So are you! In fact everyone I’ve interacted with on this forum to this point has been super lovely.

Also, I absolutely adore that one Somali dance, Buraanbur I think it’s called. I’ve seen it online a handful of times. I’ve gathered that it’s performed at weddings or at the very least special events in general, and I think only performed by girls/women? But correct me if I’m wrong in any of this.

Anyway, it is sooooo lovely, I’m obsessed. The melody and beat, the clapping, the drums, the one woman who delivers the song/poetry. It’s all just so beautiful. And I’m wondering, is it one particular piece of poetry that’s always sung? Or does it differ depending on clan or family or whoever is being celebrated at the time?

Either way though, beautiful tradition.

Yes Buraanbur is only sang by women and it’s preformed by women. It differs from person to person.Buuranbuur is usually done at weddings so there’s a lot of mention of the bride and her clan.

this buuranbur has subtitles:

SaMale

The only Somali in Arabia
