Isn't it embarrasing that Lebanon which is a economically failed state that is crumbled still looks 10x better than Somalia?

Yup, it is very very very embarrassing.

No development happens in the North, everyone is high on khat and the Army works as security guards along with the police.

Djibouti is still owned by the French and Somalis there live in poverty whilst millions come in from the foreign bases.

South Somalia is controlled by illiterate thugs and is brainwashed to accept ultra conservative wahabi Islam and explosions are part of the dhaqan.

Kenyan and South African Somalis are getting killed like flies.

Big Ls everywhere and that is not all.

Well, Lebanon is an old civilization. And the economy downturn is a temporary thing. Somalis lack internal know how to be in competition with first world nations. Its getting better tho-- slowly---thanks to diaspora investors.

You are comparing a country that is in the midst of year long economic crisis with a country that has seen war for 30 years.

Nah. Not even gonna bother arguing.

Congrats on the controversial thread topic tho. I'm sure it will go trending on SSpot.

In reality Somalia should’ve been doing way better than Lebanon a country with multiple religions, branches and factions and is a neighbour of Israel which bully them whenever they feel like it. Compare their demographics to ours we should be ashamed and be an example to them instead.

Back in the day Beirut was known as the Paris of the Middle East and Somalia was known as the Switzerland of Africa. Ohh how times have changed.

We are a $5 billion economy. When you think about it. The amount of economic potential Somalia has is ridiculous. So many low hanging fruit the can dramatically improve the country in a year time or even less

If only we could work together

It looks 10 times better because they built the city and infrastructure while the country had money.
I wouldn't be surprised to know that today djiboutians and somalilanders have a better standards of living than the lebanese. (I don't know muuch about south somalia).
Everytime I open youtube, I see new documentaries about the lebanese economic crisis. The lebanese currency is dying.
Take a look at the gdp per capita:
https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/NGDPDPC@WEO/DJI/LBN

Their gdp per capita went below the djiboutian one and they didn't release their 2021 gdp per capita (Which is even worse than the 2020 one) so this isn't a good sign.

In 2021, Lebanon looks good from the outside but the last economic crisis made everyone poor.
On a DW news documentary which was released 1 week ago, they said that 55% of the population lived with 1 dollar a day.

First you're comparing apples and with oranges:
Lebanon has always been an economic heaven for small banks and investors (the Luxembourg of Middle East), they suffered with a long-lasting and quickly got back to their old ways of being the money-bankers of that region.

Secondly, quite the contrary to your beliefs, average Somalians and Djiboutians still live better (with better wages) than the average Lebanese. Their economical bubble didn't last, due to 30 years of corruption and mismanagement.

Here's a good video on this subject:

Their war was way back in the 70s, whilst ours was in the 90s. They have generations of diasporas giving back remittances to rebuild the place, whilst our diaspora gen is only now coming of age. That’s why they’ve made more progress -simply more time

Aight since this thread did not pop off, I'll comment.

Your title implies that an economically devastated Lebanon looks better than war ravaged Somalia.

Firstly, Lebanon, as aforementioned, is a bankers hub in the MENA region. Secondly, they have had a few wars but not a sustained civil war such as Somalia. Thirdly, their diaspora are at least three gens old (there are some in America/Australia that migrated in 1910).

Last point, it is in the best interest of nations to keep Lebanon afloat. The Saudis have bailed them out with billions of dollars before and the French are scrambling right now to gather money to save their economy. If Lebanon implodes, it will not only cause a further wave of migrants but have an geo-political impact over the entire region.

Somalia by contrast, is a nation that fought each other for 30 years. Since 2011, it has been recovering rapidly. Mogadishu does not look anything like what it did 10 years ago.

Remember, Lebanon might have lost their economy but Somalia is rebuilding from the loss of a society.
