It’s Over, No More Uni for Somali-Americans.

1. The unis they went to were ranked higher than the local university in the area. They also didn't want to be stuck in the hood dealing with their parents and younger siblings for 4 years.

2. I commuted to school and went to a Community college first before transferring to a university. I lived in the poor part of my suburbs. I didn't really encounter that many distractions. Mainly because most of the people I went to high school with didn't go to college at all. It's kind of sad to say but at least 80% of the dudes in my neighborhood didn't even go to college after high school. The few guys in my neighborhood that went to college all moved away for school.

3. Studying a useful degrees is very important when it comes to living on campus. That student loan debt can be a pain in the ass if you can't pay it off. My uncles and aunts paid theirs off quick because they actually obtained useful degrees.

One of my uncles even said he planned on obtaining a Criminal justice degree, but once he realized he was the only liberal arts major amongst his group of Muslim friends, he got motivated to switch to mechanical engineering. Stories like this aren't uncommon to hear about. Plenty of Madows of Hispanics have spoken about how they never even knew about some engineering fields before they even got to college.
80% of people not going to university is jarring. Makes sense why you say students should live on campus I agree with that for sure in this case. Also parents need to emphasis education more. Especially if they live in America you must start saving up for their education and enrolling them in good afterschool programs asap. Studying Liberal arts only works for Cadaans the rest of us wont be able to get jobs even top paying jobs like they do. Certain STEM majors is where its at but with this economy idrk whats good anymore. But what I do know is STEM gives people a chance at escaping poverty.

What do you mean Ghetto? You mean somalis attend the college in greater numbers therefore it is a ghetto? Silly mindset.

The college has stellar reputation and good academic record. The U of MN accepts students from there right away because of the college's excellence in Math, Physics, Biology, Chemistry plus Health related curriculum.

I would rather see Somalis in grreater numbers around me in higher ed institutions for the positive effect it has on their future. Still love me some ghetto.

I attended both the NCC and the UofMN.
They’re saying it’s ghetto because a lot of YN adjacents are there. Mostly every Somali student signs up for community college if they didn’t get accepted to uni due to grades. So it’s going to range from kids with a 1.5 gpa up to smart PSEO kids. Although the YN adjacent kids didn’t fully die meaning no future they still lack in direction and have the high school mentality.

No, it is smart to edcuate yourself with less debt or for free. There is no difference between community college coursework in what they call Transfer Curirculum(a two year generally required credits for all major degrees), or the coursework you do at the University for the same general crediuts required for most majors. Only different is the U is more expensive.

Somali parents can not afford to save for college as they are the first immigrants who came with nothing. And they shouldn't save at all for that purpose. If the kids want to get into debt, that should be their prerogative. Their parents already had it rough in life raising them. Most of these kids are selfish anyway, so the best a parent can hope for is for these kids to take care of themselves later and not turn out to be losers.

It is a waste to have kids in America if you ask me.

In America that makes sense for you to go to community college then university. Here we just go straight to university most of the times. Only time I've seen people do half College half university was for Nursing. Also I'm not referring to our parents generation who came here as refugees, I'm referring to Millennial/Gen z parents who should start saving if they can for education.
