The Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) calls for seeking refuge in Allah from sadness because it weakens the heart and severs the path to Allah. Therefore, it is a target of Satan's goals and an object of his desires, which he seeks to attain from the sons of Adam. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Tariq al-Hijratayn (p. 279): "The point is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made sadness something to be sought refuge from. This is because sadness weakens the heart, weakens resolve, and harms willpower. Nothing is more beloved to Satan than the sadness of a believer. Allah the Almighty says: {Indeed, the private conversation is only from Satan to grieve those who have believed}. Sadness is a disease of the heart that prevents it from rising, moving forward, and rolling up its sleeves."
