Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said in Tariq al-Hijratayn (p. 279): "The point is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made sadness something to be sought refuge from. This is because sadness weakens the heart, weakens resolve, and harms willpower. Nothing is more beloved to Satan than the sadness of a believer. Allah the Almighty says: {Indeed, the private conversation is only from Satan to grieve those who have believed}. Sadness is a disease of the heart that prevents it from rising, moving forward, and rolling up its sleeves."
