The active chemical ingredient in khat that provides the stimulant effect is called "cathinone". It is chemically similar to ephedrine and other stimulants. Synthetic cathinone powder is cheap and is widely available in china but recreational drug users usually prefer other popular stimulants like nootropics or amphetamines.
