population of Somalia is 16 million but i dont think @Periplus is including ethnic minorities who are roughly in total 1 million. population of ethnic somalis ( hawiye,darood,dir,d&m) inside somalia (including somaliland) would be around 15 million

In my opinion we’re over 30 million probably around 35-38 million remember it’s hard to count nomadic populations plus southern Somalia hasn’t been properly surveyed since the 70s and that’s where the bulk of Somalis population resides

I think ethnic minorities are way more then 1 million in my opinion there probably 15-25 percent of the population population of ethnic Somalis in Ethiopia is probably around 10-12 million if you look at the 1994 and 2007 Ethiopian censuses you start to notice undercounting in Somali region

Why do people always call African ethnic group tribes....why don't we call the French,English or German,Russian as European tribes?

Somalis are probably 30 million worldwide, Oromos are within the 40-45 million.I don't know anything about the others but Egyptians (non-Nubians or Beja) are definitely one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa with atleast 90 mil.The Maghrebi Arabs are up there as well with atleast another 96 million (adding Berbers and Arabs together as they are genetically the same).

Eurocentric view, africans are stereotypically viewed as living in jungle and so on, so the "tribe" thing is widely used.

I was speaking about the genetically Cushitic ones, Bantus regardless if they speak Af-Somali or Af-Maay are Bantus lol.I consider the Af-Maay speakers as distinct but our closest linguistic cousins.Kinda like Galician & Portuguese

It’s undercounted if anything. There may be as much as 12 million Somalis in the Ogaden region.

It overestimates it’s population for aid purposes and for geopolitical reasons.They want to make themselves seem like the African Giants of Nigeria & Egypt.Ethiopia barely reaches 80 million imo and 90% of that population is in the highlands and extremely rural.Somalis from Somaliweyn are far more urbanized than other Horner ethnic groups but I do concede that K5 is still the most rural parts of Somaliweyn with no major urban centres the size of Xamar or Hargeisa

Ethiopia has always had a higher population than Egypt historically. In 1900, Ethiopia’s population was 11.8 million whilst Egypt’s was 10.2 million. Today Ethiopia’s population is 120 million whilst Egypt’s population is 102 million. Both increased almost exactly the same.
