I just started watching this talk this somali professor gave.
But it's not off to a good start i mean who uses such an outdated classification that nobody has used in decades.

Somalia academia has died along with many elements of culture such as theatre. I think it’s a good start to be having these conferences in the first place.inAny erroneous views and paradigms will eventually be corrected in the future. Some of these elders aren’t really with the recent archeological studies and what we are learning from DNA studies etc. They’re probably most going of old studies or things they’re researched using non conventional academic methods.


What was his angle anyway? I clicked on it and I saw a bit where he was saying Somalis were using the same stick as Pharoahs.

I remember reading Soviet era Russian anthropologists discussing the existence of more Somaloid dialectic diversity by means of a dialect continuum until a large maxa expansion. They also characterized Somaloid speakers as being among the most ready worldwide to undergo linguistic shifts.

It was in an older edition of the Great Russian Encyclopedia. Think Sakuye shifting to Boran, Rendille shifting to Maa, Jiddu shifting to Maxa, etc.

He is mentioning a lot of outdated pseudo linguistic jargon like Hamitic, which has been overturned by modern linguists.

If you want updated information on Somali language and its development, there are two linguists i would highly recommend and that is Abdalla Omar Mansur and Christopher Ehret.

Abdalla Mansur may Allah reward him, has done the lionshare of the work of documenting, recording and studying the Somali language since the collapse. He was the former Head of the Languages Department at the Somali National University
