Most Somalis are self supported believe it or not.

Actually this is not equivalent at all, they are not outcasts or a caste. In the rural areas they were more like bondsmen/clients and in the urban towns they had a elevated role.

Urban craftsmen were not Gaboye at all. When those 19th century orientalist sources mention this they are focusing on rural bondsmen in Miiyiga who btw are descended from various clans , Gaboye is not a clan and their role is often reduced because food production take up the more importance, so they are secondary to that.

The urban ones were different they were organized into the formal professional guilds and were also from various lineages. They crafted things for market places and traded it.




And when other Somalis moved into the towns and cities they would often take up on the same occupations , the same with the rural Gaboye as they were no longer were bondsmen when they settled in the major towns and as it was more common place.

There is no noble or ignoble clans. This is what these gaalo orientalist writers tried project their feudalism in interpreting Somali social structure, which is based on an economic exchange system, not serfs and feudal overlords.

It’s truly a shame that an ummah who believes themselves to be pious Muslims treats a section of their society even a fraction of the way Pajeets treat Dalits.

But to be fair, the discrimination Madhibaans and other “midgaan” groups in Somalia are subjected to is not to the extent of what the lower caste Indians face. There’s no superstitions of not eating out of the dishes they eat from. No separate facilities. It’s rare that they are barred from attending school with other children or from receiving a higher education (lower caste Indians have roles and positions they cannot pass, fields they’re not allowed to work in, things have been changing in the recent years however) and aren’t necessarily forced into demeaning positions like the Dalits are.
