Merca, some 70km (45 miles) south-west of Mogadishu, is now the biggest town under al-Shabab control.

African Union forces who had held the port city for three-and-a-half years withdrew earlier on Friday morning.

The loss is a major setback for the African Union force (Amisom) in its decade-long battle against al-Shabab, the BBC's Tomi Oladipo says.
Amisom forces moved out at midday and the local administration and all other Somali security forces left a few minutes later - and then heavily armed al-Shabab militants entered the town," local resident Ibrahim Mumin told AFP
It's not under shabaab nor amisom, it's under the control of local hawiye clans. This video is from 1 week ago.

@Odeg what do you think of this?

It is believed by various historians the Qubeys Surre & Abdalle Surre migrated from the northern part of Somalia currently known as Somaliland approximately 1316 A.D. The Surre Clan migrated to parts of southern and central Somalia as well as parts of Ethiopia and Kenya. However a small fraction of the Qubeys clan remained in Somaliland and reside in Togdheer Somaliland till this day.

The first setlers of tje city of marka were arab merchants from arabia. Shortly after ajurans take over the south they were in control of the city hence the numerous texts suggesting marka was a hawiye city, as ajuuraans were hawiye.

Biyomaals in the other hand migrated from the north to settle in lower shabele and middle jubba - marka, namber 50 and jammaame to be exact. It wad after the collapse of the ajuraan dynasty, the biyamaals took over the control the city marka and became the masters of lower shabele.

Its true biyamaals fought the italians ina battle called the FINLOW batlle where they took a huge loss but hold their ground and were verry brave. The reason the biyomaals went to war with the italiand is, the italians killed thousands of biyomaal subjescts in a town called janaale, the place is called keliasaay ( the widow channel ).

The HG were recent new comers from galgaduud n muduh area. The sole argument they have over the ownership of the city is becouse ajuuraans were in charge a long time ago and they were supposedly Hawiye.

I hope both clans get into agreement soon and come with a solution. This is not good for the city nor its residents.

It is all about population and administration which both Biyomaal has in Lower Shabelle. As for the Bantu appearance some of them intermarried with their former farm workers.

Yariisow (a Biyomaal) is the district mayor of Merka.

Hiraab were subjects to the ajuuran and played a role during the running of the empire. Also played a key role in ousting the ajuuran in the 17th century alongside Silcis (who had a short lived kingdom) and Geledi (who established their own sultanate) while Hiraab established an independent Imamate system and not subject to anyone.

Essentially, the hiraab and Geledi became the dominant ruling clans of the south (Silcis too until they were defeated by Geledi) well until the Scramble for Africa.

@Boqor Geeljire252 is correct in there being medieval sources which states Hawiye's presence in Merka.

Peace is needed in the south. If Hg and Dir can get along in Mudug, surely they can get along in the south.

Biyomaal were allies of geledi in ousting the ajuuraan. A man named Abroone was the leader of the biyomaal and the surre in the region. Im not denying the hiraab precense in the south but to think they were the masters of marka is mere speculations. Shorltly after the ajuurans left mogadishu n baraawe belonged to the geledi sultanated while marka belonged to biyomaals. This is in im lewis book.

Typical Somali's always falling for the same old bait tricks from the kingpins of Fitnah & Fasaad, never learn from it no matter how many times you tell them, even during this holy month they still fall for it.

The dude that created this thread is a secessionist Gaas loyalist whom did it intentionally to spread the usual dosage fitnah they are predisposed to even in this month among the nationalists and he succeeded.

Every inch from coast to coast belongs to all Somali's full stop, if families migrated there tomorrow none would stop them and this is the case everywhere else in Somalia except the very few tuulo's/towns he comes from were you become a humiliated abject second class citizen.
