Mental illness among Somalis

According to WHO, 1/3 of Somalia's population suffers from mental illness which places Somalia as amongst the countries with the highest rates of mental health issues, mainly due to the ongoing conflict and lack of access to health services.

IMO, one of worst problems to arise from the civil war is surely this. 1/3 of the population being unwell is crazy, Somali leaders need to step up and do something to provide help.

apparently they tested ppl in high-conflict zones in Somalia and found that they had high rates of psychological distress and panic.. which isn’t weird. When I heard “1 in 3 suffer from mental illness” I thought they were suffering from something more severe

“You feel a bit down. It is because you are mentally ill, let’s douse you with chemicals”. Always view mental health reports done on third world countries by westerners with skepticism. Actually view it with skepticism even in your life particularly those doctors who want to push you onto pills for your mild symptoms. These people have a different assumption of what the human is entirely.

The aim of this study is to fill the epidemiological gap and provide population based data on mental health conditions in the South-Central region of Somalia.
The overall prevalence of common mental disorders was 557 (78.1%) with panic. There is a high prevalence of mental disorders with anxiety disorders being the commonest. Findings reflect earlier studies that showed higher rates in conflict and post-conflict settings.

The mental illness in Somalis in Somalia is mostly anxiety and panic related. 78% of the mental health problems documented was of that nature. And it's concentrated in the south central region linked to conflict zones.

I spoke about it a couple of months back
The study is talking about caabsi (panic) and the state of fear and perpetual worry living in a conflict zone in South Central Somalia which where they pulled the participants from.

How do you take this and extrapolate/project major mental illnesses(which this isn't btw) in high rates on Somalis from other parts of the world and other parts of Somalia?
Aside from that anxiety disorders are pretty much a common thing throughout the world , in America alone there is like 25% people with it and they are not lifelong permanent conditions but situational. Everybody experience anxiety/anxious feelings sometime in their life.

Also people being anxious has nothing to do with turning to crime, gangs or terrorism etc or whatever, stuff said. which is more to do with socio-economics.

The good news is that unlike serious mental illnesses like personality disorders (which is the type that makes people lose their minds and go crazy) this can all get better with treatment.

Not sure about this one, tbh. Had a conversation with hooyo about mental illness amongst Somalis and she had many anecdotes in the diaspora of Somalis suddenly going mad, with no prior warning. Very chilling
We have to ask ourselves how they conducted this research. NGOs often lie about their results in order to receive more funding.

We're genetically prone to these conditions most of them are environmentally induced, these are my results FYI but the average Somali will also carry these genes, just stay away from drinking, smoking and high stress, ADHD and Bipolar is common amongst Somali but is manageable.

Just as Teaching and teachers are regarded as a noble honerable career, mental health counseling and therapy should be treated as such to curb this issue
