Sanaag was empty desert then and it is a empty desert now.Very useless region.
Majority of SL's history from Land of Punt,Axum,Ifat,Adal and latter Ottomans were based in Awdal,Gabiley,Saaxil regions
Western SL and Somali Galbeed(minus the Hawd) is full of history and civilizations!
Most somali reasons and africa had more barwaaqo and it was a lot more forested then. The process of deforestation has had a big impact on somali inhabited areas and especially north africa.
Sanaag was most likely much more suitable for agriculture and had a lot more greenery.

Land of Punt on the other hand has nothing to do with Sanaag.Majority of archeologists agree that it roughly encompassed Eritrea,Djoubiti and W.Somaliland

That's a huge stretch. There no evidence to suggest that Waaq is related to a North-west Semitic sky-god.
