I don't think Somalis understand how this will end. Alshabab will be with us for the next 10-20 years, they are not going anywhere. In almost every dugsi in Somalia children are taught the same ideology that Alshabab uses to justify its action. Even in Puntland, most dugsis teach that drivel. The Somali people are creating the perfect environment for Alshabab's continued existence. You cannot defeat an enemy into who's ideology most of your population is indoctrinated.

The only way out is to shoot your way out. Tens of thousands of Somalis must be killed, many of them who have committed no violence. You have to terrorize the terrorists.

Signing a peace deal is a slap in the face to the patients that were laying in the hospitals AS blew up, the medical graduates whose graduation ceremony was blown up by AS, the men that were assassinated inside mosques. There's no room for softness when dealing with these monsters. If Farmaajo considers them his brothers then it says a lot about him.

You can't reason with these people. They don't use the logic that normal people use. You just have to keep culling their numbers, you will never win outright, and hope that over time they become irrelevant. No trials, no reeducation, and no negotiations. You have to do what Alavaro Uribe did to the FARC.

Somalia will forever be stuck in a cycle of violence if people like AS continue to exist in the country. Farmaajo is an idiot for referring to them as "brothers" when they would gladly behead him.

I don't think Farmaajo is even sympathetic to Islamists let alone to jihadists. Most of his cabinet are Anti-Islamists unlike the previous governments.

When you're fighting a stronger enemy, you don't fight them in an open combat. Somalia is not stronger than Al Shabab, they would overrun koonfur were it not for AMISOM.

He's still very naive...
:ivers:

Calling them "brothers" is an insult to all innocent folks that have been killed or have life-changing injuries because of AS.

And what about the people of today and tomorrow? The innocent folks who may die tomorrow because of an Al Shabab bombing? Surely their lives are more important than people who are already dead?

Some of them might come over and change sides then join the professional army. The rest can be forced to disarm through the clan system. You folks make it seem Somalis don't know how to solve issues like this. Killing thousands of young people is not the solution. I dare those who suggest killing tens of thousands of Somalis to accept their clansmen be killed first by the thousands.

Farmaajo is doing the right thing by appealing to the average person first. That is how you start. Violence begets violence.

So calling them "brothers" & appeasing them will stop future killings?
:childplease:

Bottom line is they're the enemy, nothing more & nothing less...

Something must be done to:

1) Stop the bombings
2) Allow aid to reach the areas which Al Shabab, regions which hundreds of thousands of Somalis are at risk.

I do believe that certain parts or factions of Al Shabab will never stop though.

You don't want anything that will bog down the progress of strengthening institutions of government. War drains resources. You need an army that is above clan, well paid, patriotic and popular with people. For now, appeals to the clans and families to play their role by preventing their kinsmen joining violent groups is the way to go. You don't create enemies when you have no army to fight and hold territories.

I don't support killing thousands of Somalis that may sympathise with AS. Education is the key to instilling nationalism into these people & challenging the extremist views that they've been taught. Those who refuse lay down their weapons & pledge allegiance to the state should be eliminated.

It's called a strategy, he's probably trying to draw out the youth and poor who joined out of convenience. The hardcore guys won't change.

Most of Al Shabaab is normal people who live under their occupation, and have no better choices. You can't paint them all as the outright enemy, because that will alienate those who wish for a different situation.

How will it help if Somalia wants to outright kill the kinds of soldiers who had their villages taken over and were forced to fight with Al Shabaab to survive? It will only create animosity towards the Government. Faarmajo has to paint himself and the Government as these people's saviours.

And I'm not talking about the diehard Al Shabaab fanatics. Those can be killed for all I care.

Couldn't have said it better.

And to add, many of those who sympathise with Al Shabaab don't do it out of ideological reasons, but because al Shabaab actually is the only ones who are providing them with anything. If you see Al Shabaabs social media propaganda, they're giving out aid, "educating" children and providing food and events in places where there is no local or federal government.

If Faarmajo can give the occupied people a better life after liberation, they will never turn back.

We can generally divide Al Shabab into three:

1) People with Al Shabab only for interests/qabiil.
2) Islamists who Al Shabab forced to join them (the only Islamist group in Somalia fighting the government is now Al Shabab)
3) Jihadists who want to establish an Al Qaeda caliphate (and these can be divided between local/foreign/controlled by intelligence).

He should have made that distinction by only calling the young fighters "brothers" that have no other choice rather than calling everyone from AS "brothers". Many people will now mis-interpret his speech, he needs to be careful with his speeches.
