Do know what company got the contract for Galkayo and what country they are from?

The Government didn't do a call for proposals yet. The call will be made after Garowe airport is finished. Companies will have few weeks to submit their proposal and one of those proposals will be awarded. The call for proposals for Garowe airport was made after Bosaso airport was completed.

Word is Galkayo is getting a new airport outside the city, have you heard that?

I welcome that. The city is extending towards the south east in the direction of the airport. In few years the airport will be surrounded by neighbourhoods. The current one should be used for khat planes or turn into military base

Salalah Air explores flights to gateway of Africa

By Kaushalendra Singh — SALALAH: Oct 19:

The first private airline of Oman, Salalah Air, is likely to begin passenger and cargo service to Bosaso-Puntland, Somalia sometime in December this year. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Salalah Air and Golden Safari Travel and Tourism on Wednesday in presence of officials of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry — Salalah Chapter, Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Salalah Air. Under the MoU, both the parties agreed to explore the best practices to run the operation. The signatories to the MoU were Sam Owen, CEO of Salalah Air and Mohammed Farah, CEO of Golden Safari Travel and Tourism, which has nine branches in East Africa.

A senior official of Salalah Air termed the MoU an important step, which could generate lots of investment in Oman and many direct and indirect jobs for the Omani youths. “It would be like a new gateway for passenger and cargo movement to and from Salalah,” he said. Mohammed Farah, CEO of Golden Safari Travel Agency, said initially there might be weekly flights only and depending upon the demand there would be more flights. “The idea is to project Salalah as the gateway of the Gulf and Bosaso-Puntland in Somalia as the gateway of Africa. A distance of 435 miles can be covered only in 46 minutes,” said Farah.

The short distance and time is the biggest advantage and it would make movement of fast moving consumer (FMCGs) goods easy, he said. According to Farah, many direct flights are operating from Dubai to Bosaso-Puntland with passengers and commercial goods. “It shows that the place has potential and being very close from Salalah, any service from Salalah is going to be very good,” he said. Commenting on possible avenues with this link, Farah said: “Health services, medicines, transportation of food items etc would become very easy and there are many agriculture products which can (be flown) within no time from Bosaso, he said. Barkhad Mohammed of Somalian Social Club in Salalah expressed happiness over the move and said he was living in Salalah for the last 20 years.

“If something of the kind materialises, it would be like a dream come true for us. There is no doubt about it that Salalah is the gateway of the Gulf, so is Bosaso for Africa. There (is) huge business possibility for both the places,” he said. The Golden Safari Travel Agency would be the sole agent of this sector in Salalah. The Salalah Air is working hard to set up its facilities in Salalah to start its regular operations in January 2017. The private airlines, according to sources, would be an in-country air service provider, a regional charter operator with growth strategy for East Africa. Headquartered in Salalah, it would operate initially on Salalah, Sohar and Duqm sectors.
