In Bay and Bakool, AS is dominated by D&M but that is not necessarily the case in the rest of the country. AS is a multi-clan organisation hence it is ignorant to associate certain clans with AS. For instance, in Galgadud, AS are all Hawiye in areas that they control such as Ceel Buur (Murusade and Duduble), Xarardhere and parts of Hobyo district (HG) and Ceel Dhere (Abgaal). In the parts of Middle Shabelle which are a stronghold of AS, you will also find that the AS foot soldiers and leadership are Hawiye.
In Lower Shabelle, AS is now waging war on the Biimaal. Hence, the idea that Southern Dir are supporters of AS is inaccurate.
My own Surre clan are traditionally Sufi Xeers and none of our main Deegans are controlled by AS, for instance, Galgadud Surre Dirs formed the ASWJ with the Cayr and MX in order to jointly fight against AS around a decade ago.
The only Southern Dirs that are fully under AS influence are the ones in Lower/Middle Jubba and it ain't like they got a choice as the entire area is an AS stronghold. If you refuse to pay 'Zakat', the Mofos burn your village to the ground and take your livestock as has happened several times to various clans.
