The home ownership don't matter. Most Londoners can barely afford a home, let alone rent and most of those that did buy homes did so back when it was affordable. So a lot either privately rent and want to rent for social housing if it was available in higher numbers.

Most Somalis live in London, and rent prices here are crazy. Many of us are young and still live with Hooyo, and some of us need to stay with her to prevent her from being moved out of London. With multiple people under one roof working, it actually helps. We're a small percentage anyway as most of the earlier immigrants got their house through social housing.

A lot of Somalis in the UK are conservative Muslims who avoid riba, so they don’t take out mortgages even though mortgages are often cheaper or the same as rent. Allah is really testing us out here. Also, social housing in the UK doesn’t mean your full rent is paid you still need to top it up. Our parents are also working they're not unemployed.
