The U.S. officially considers pilots who have flown above 80 kilometers (or about 262,000 feet) to be astronauts.

While the rest of the world accepts the Karman line (100 km, 62 miles, 328,000 ft) as the edge of space.

For perspective, the lowest altitude for an orbiting spacecraft is about 170 km; the altitude of the ISS is about 400 km
