Bro this is a Somali nationalist forum, you won't find genuine answers here considering most people here don't even consider democracy to be kufr. Just read surah al maidah you'll get your answers.

Why do you think electing ones own leader is kufr? I haven’t come across any proof for that stance.

Choosing or electing a leader doesn't go against Islam. However, what I think he meant is the current western secular democratic system which says the law is for the people and they decide what they want. Whereas the Muslim belief is that legislation only belongs to Allah and that a Muslim nation has to follow the Quran and Sunnah as the foundations for their governmental system.
Something unfortunately for us Muslims since the time of colonialism until now the West doesn't allow to naturally take place. Rather they force this notion of separating state and religion on Muslim nations by any means possible.
Democracy as in electing ones leader is a simple view. Of course with that definition it is not haram.
An expanded definition would include assumptions about sovereignty, human rights, formation of law, who is the citizen, social contract, collective will of the people etc I could go on for hours. The concept of the modern world regarding these things are not in line with Islam or a system of sharia - Yes there is no country that has sharia as a system of law rather it is only a source of law.
