Sadly, the Egyptians left to focus on Sudanese Mahdist's and the British filled the gap left behind in the Northern Somali seaboard which meant you guys were left to fight against the Abyssinians (who were supplied by the west) in the fateful Battle of Chelenqo, 1887.

AUN to all who perished.

While Egypt was occupying Harar, the British invaded and occupied Egypt hence Harar came under British rule. France demanded UK to leave harar or war would erupt between the two superpowers because they got jealous. france and uk hatched a secret plan that neither should occupy Harar nor their rival Italy. Menelik invaded Harar under intense pressure by Britain because they feared Italy would try to invade Harar and then ethiopian highlands.

Thanks for clearing that up sxb.

Perhaps the Turks expected Sharmarke to run the ports of Berbera, Zeila, and Tadjoura as they wished but gave him autonomy to do as he wished in the Somali interior hence his activities against the Hararis?
The Turks never really had any control over the area. They would acknowledge anyone who seized power as long as they paid tribute to the Caliph.

Emir Haji Shermarke seized control of Zeila and pledged allegiance to the Ottomans to legitimize his rule.

Yeah but when did Harar become more important then Saylac?

I think your trying to ask why the Egyptians chose to invade Harar. Zaila was more important however Hararis pleaded with the Egyptians that the Harari king had allied with the Oromo hence they wanted to be liberated. The Egyptians agreed because they already had plans to march on Ethiopia to secure the source of the nile river.

Maybe so, but seeing as Saylac was the capital of the Ifat and Adal sultanates, it went into decline for a long time, nowadays it's a dusty tuulo

Adal's capital was Dakar then Harar. Zaila was abandoned because it was very difficult to defend despite being able to bring in much revenue. Portuguese ships would bombard the city and destroy it. When Ifat's heirs returned they founded Dakar which was inland and called themselves the kings of Adal hence the Adal sultanate. When Adal lost Ethiopian territory, the Portuguese could not attack Harar because they were not good in land battles but port cities they could demolish due to their naval power at the time which is equivalent to the united states today.

Zeila was the capital during Ahmed Gurey's rule. After his death it was moved to Dakkar and then finally Harar.

This is what I meant by a certain demographic claiming other people's history. War yaa ilaahay yaqaana!
Look at this from the Somali Wikipedia page on Ahmed Gurey:

Wuxuu Ka Dhashay Qowmiyada Somaalida Wuxuuna kasoo jedaa beel weynta Isaaq Habar-Awal Sacad Muse wuxuu ka siiyahay Makaahiil sida taariikhdu cadaynayso wuxuuna naanees ahaan u watay Axmad Gareen al-ghazi balse soomaalidu waxey u yaqaanaan axmed gureyhttps://so.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imaam_Axmed_Guray
