Snapshot: Veteran SNA Soldiers who fought in the 1977 Ogaden war, take part in jihad to defend Somalia from Ethopian invasion in 2006

Thousands of youth, volunteers and a handful of veteran soldiers stood up for their homeland.

Somalis from Ogaden, Puntland and Somaliland poured in to volunteer in this fight. A few dozen Muslim Turks, Kurds, Palestinians , European converts and Egyptians chipped in as well.

This is one defining event that showed the high levels of patriotism and religious zeal in Somalis.

A Somali scholar detailed this period in his book

Title ''The reflection on the revolution of the Islamic Courts''

I truly believe ICU was hijacked by AS by foreign forces. Namely CIA/Mossad. They turned this beautiful somali-lead islamic movement into a monster that has become despised.

The ICU discontinued basically, only a minor youth faction of it continued fighting alongside volunteers and eventually defeated the Ethiopians and drove them out.

But it wouldn't be farfetched to say it was hijacked when we know how CIA and Mossad had connections to the warlords in Mogadishu that was outsted by the ICU.

It probably could be at this point because it's hard to wrap your head around how/why they lost widespread support when the Ethiopians withdrew and their change it direction.

Another thing that happened is that literally purged members from what was a originally youth based resistant and it resulted in massive exodus in their leadership. They started beefing Somalis and other Muslims who were against affiliating with Al-Qaeda and their terror tactic.

But then again this could just be just a byproduct of the invasion, that it radicalized it.

You found the authors twitter handle? The book was published in 2015 but it's mostly a collection earlier writings put together by the same author.

There were always extremist factions present in the ICU, but they only took power after the weakening of the main leadership in 2006. A Saudi was recruited by a Somali in Bosnia to fight in Ogaden. He was later arrested by the Ethiopians, sent back to prison in Saudi Arabia, and eventually became an al-Qaeda leader there.
