Soqotra is part of greater Puntland.

Somalis don't seem to have bothered settling it much despite being avid sailors who frequently went up to Yemen, Oman and the Khaleej. Same actually goes for Yemenis. The native Soqotri seem to have come there a long time ago, arguably well over 1-2,000 years ago and are not even natively Arabic speakers but MSA speakers. Other than them it seems the inhabitants were largely just a few runaway slaves from places like the Swahili coast, Somalia and Arabia.

Take a good look at the place and you'll realize why fairly quickly if you have an eye for geography. Before the modern era where it now has potential as a strategic point along shipping lanes and as a tourist spot for its lovely beaches and unique fauna, it largely only had two things to offer in the past:

  • Poor pasture land
  • Somewhat decent fishing waters

Why would anyone leave Somalia or Arabia to live on a poorer Somalia or Arabia and top that off by further being isolated at sea? So yeah, no one really bothered with it until the modern era.
