Somali cinema

Yesterday while watching a Hong Kong movie i realized how much i really love to watch international / foreign movies, but it never really crossed my mind to watch Somali movies.... I don't know how to start but do we even have a proper film industry back home not sloppy youtube skits but real featured fims? If so what should i watch and who are some interesting movie directors and where can i watch them.. I want to dive deep into our cinema so give all the informations you have

What was you watching Fallen Angels? Chungking Express?

Yeah somali cinema got killed during its infancy it had potential but the civil war paused any proper film making. Now our culture has shifted so much that any film production will not only be a technical feat but an social one as well.

No it was a film called "Made in Hong Kong" i love Wong kar wai's movies too i have watched a couple of them years ago but this moved me so much its like a wong kar wai movie but on steroids much more raw, bold and intense and very nihilistic too, you should watch it if you haven't.

This is so sad i was looking at some reviews of the movie you attached and people were praising it so much and the director's other movies too.. its a tragic how much we've regressed post war it seems like our only hope lies with the diaspora now

Wong kar wai is the goat and the budget for his movies was extremely cheap but the problem with filming in Somalia is i don't think there is enough diversity in filming environments. Also hiring actors and getting random pedestrians to respect the filming set would be a nightmare. The silver lining is that once you create the first movie others might get inspired and follow along. A really nice example is the somali fashion revialist movment that want to revive traditional male clothing. One brother started it and then another group also popped up within weeks. A couple years down the line we are going to see the mainstream adoption of it inshallah.

You might like a movie called all about lily chou chou its a Japanese but its has a similar tone to the movies your describing. The OST is phenomial too.

Growing up my parents would go to this Somali store to get CDs and VCRs and they would have Somali movies. I remember I would be watching a lot of Stage plays in the form of a movie? Idrm. Those stores had everything try finding one near you area.

Have you watched captain philips or black hawk down? These are the only somali movies I know of, however I'm guessing these don't count as they weren't produced by somalis.
