Dress evolves
Evolving is fine but not adopting Asian skirts and Omani hats.
Why can't we evolve like the Rwandans??
Dress evolves
macawis is compatible to nomadic culture , highly doubt nomads were wearing alindi fabric as well but thats the main representation of somali culture.
The macawis has been a part of somali culture long enough I would consider it somali too. Remember no culture is static or completely unique. Also before that pattern, men would wear plain white izaars as the arabs call it. It’s a pretty common piece of clothes like how the Scottish have kilts. Every culture on earth you see got things from other cultures.You can wear the lungi (macawiis) to sleep but remember, you are not a bengali fisherman, you are a nomad. It's not our traditional clothing so don't claim it as such.
There is going to be a point when other ethnic groups notice that we are wearing their clothing and they will ask; WERE YOU NAKED BEFORE??
Same goes for those Somali girls who dare to wear Hindi Saris at weddings and Bindis, cringeworthy.
Sis I'm not trying to see rib cages and man boobs on display. Somali men either have boobs bigger than most women's or are malnourished to the point of counting and identifying their ribcage.Sadly at Somali weddings; we will see a Somali bride wearing traditional outfits (3 or 4 types) meanwhile the groom is either wearing a suit or clothes imported from Asia aka the "macawiis" or the square Omani hat;
This is the original Somali dress for male nomads;
NOT
THE OMANI HAT:
OR THE SAUDI HEAD WRAP
OR THE MALAYSIAN/INDONESIAN SKIRT aka "Macawiis"-- it's called a LUNGI and it's from Asia
Maybe you nomads would like to wear those dresses again but us nobles never wore those ugly garments View attachment 73993 View attachment 73994

I've noticed this weird behaviour on this site. As if our roles were static and you couldnt be an urban dweller and have family who were pastoral or grow up a nomad and become an urban dweller or be a nomad and be a warrior. It's like English people being ashamed of their traditional culture because they had empires later.Not all of us were nomads, some of us were city dwellers, Sultans and Navy men.
We need to stop painting everyone as a reer baadiyo type
I think at this point macawis is our culture but I agree otherwise. I wish our traditional clothing could be modernized as well. One thing I give credit to gulf Arabs is that they wear their clothing while most others wear suits.Sadly at Somali weddings; we will see a Somali bride wearing traditional outfits (3 or 4 types) meanwhile the groom is either wearing a suit or clothes imported from Asia aka the "macawiis" or the square Omani hat;
