Why can't we evolve like the Rwandans??
Male Somali nomads wore two garments, one on the bottom and one on the top, both were white.
Even if the fabric changes, the structure shouldn't change.
Look at the modern day suit, it adapted over time but the concept of the suit is still there.
There really is no excuse for replacing our traditional clothing for hindi wear.

The macawis has been a part of somali culture long enough I would consider it somali too. Remember no culture is static or completely unique. Also before that pattern, men would wear plain white izaars as the arabs call it. It’s a pretty common piece of clothes like how the Scottish have kilts. Every culture on earth you see got things from other cultures.
I think Somalis place too much emphasis on traditionally clothes that the ancestors who wore them didn’t. To them they just threw on sheets to not be naked, didn’t put any special significance to them. Clothes food etc are the superficial elements of a culture that tend to morph over time.what makes a culture stand out are it’s morals, values and so on

Sis I'm not trying to see rib cages and man boobs on display. Somali men either have boobs bigger than most women's or are malnourished to the point of counting and identifying their ribcage.Sadly at Somali weddings; we will see a Somali bride wearing traditional outfits (3 or 4 types) meanwhile the groom is either wearing a suit or clothes imported from Asia aka the "macawiis" or the square Omani hat;

There is no such thing as traditional Somali clothing.
Did Somali nomads make those white cotton clothes? Or did they import it from America and India?
And what is ironic the most is the fact that Somali nomads only started wearing those white cotton clothes in the 19th century, after traders on the coast started importing from America and India and trading it with the Somali nomads in the interior for livestock, frankincense, etc. Before that, they used to dress in leather.

I've noticed this weird behaviour on this site. As if our roles were static and you couldnt be an urban dweller and have family who were pastoral or grow up a nomad and become an urban dweller or be a nomad and be a warrior. It's like English people being ashamed of their traditional culture because they had empires later.Not all of us were nomads, some of us were city dwellers, Sultans and Navy men.
We need to stop painting everyone as a reer baadiyo type
The entire Somali culture is centred around pastoralism and our name and language shows that. No real Somalis are ashamed of this. If you have an issue with this maybe it's time for you to go by a new name? You are after all named after these people and not the other way around.
Also post some pics of your traditional clothing because the clothing above is Arab influenced and recent.

I think at this point macawis is our culture but I agree otherwise. I wish our traditional clothing could be modernized as well. Demanding the reinstatement of Af Somali is not the same as demanding women to dress half naked. Also, those white clothes of the nomads can be adjusted into a more modern clothing and then have it worn throughout Somalia like the khamiis is worn in the gulf
