I will inshaAllah provide jobs, education and lectures for our people back home, that should be manly enough for you. I like first world stability and luxury that it provides me. I also love that my job is not to fix a mess that happened more then two decades ago and instead get to keep progressing for my own benefit and people close to me.

Their support extends to a hawala payment every month. In a traditional gender role, they would stay and fight for their family, they would sign up to the army and fight Shabaab and whatever else may hurt them. They would also plough the fields or rear livestock but instead they sit their asses in coffee shops.

Therefore Somali women do not need to abide by traditional gender roles if the men do not.

I thought it was order the bride thing, not leave them there and give them a monthly payment. I'm not s selfless person and I do things if I see no benefit. You always find out new ways how messed up the community is.

If you don't like your gender roles then don't expect Somali men to be traditional because he will not give you meher. The wedding, honeymoon, house rent and bills will be split to 50/50. When you're on a date with him, you'll pay your half.

We get it you like modern relationships but don't force that culture onto other people who aren't into it. Some Somali women prefer traditional relationships and they are willing to do their gender roles. Nobody is forcing them. They just know it's part of the bargain.

Mehr is a religious obligation.

Firstly, it's not logic but a non-sequitur.

Secondly, there is no objective and universal standard of "traditional values" that has been officially codified.

Thirdly, Somalia is unsalvageable wasteland. End of discussion. You wouldn't be fighting to save anything.

Lastly, traditional values is not a discrete concept. It's a spectrum and certain aspects of it are discarded with time. Wouldn't you agree it's ridiculous for a xalimo to not expect a traditional marriage because she did not undergo FGM? It's an extreme analogy but it's a strong one, no doubt.
