In Camden there is a road named called Somali that dates to between 1904 and 1908. During this period there was an increased demand for housing. To meet the supply, one land owning family, the Powell- Cotton family sold their land in the Kilburn High Road area.
This road came to be after one of Major Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton's many expeditions, specifically the one to Somaliland and Abyssinia (1899-1900). He named this street after the Somalis and the parallel road after Asmara in 1912. The ironic part is that in 1913, the road surrounding both of these was named after Menelik because back in the year 1900, Powell-Cotton was given the rights to go hunting within Ethiopia by Menelik.
I feel that Menelik Road should have been a few miles away but alas. Another thing of note is that in the modern day, such street names would offend the right wing who would call it woke nonsense.
