My great uncle was pretty successful . He studied medicine in Moscow. After he graduated he opened up a clinic in Mogadishu, but he moved to the states when the state started to collapse.

My great uncle was pretty successful . He studied medicine in Moscow. After he graduated he opened up a clinic in Mogadishu, but he moved to the states when the state started to collapse.

My father was in the STEMs and was also successful but he remarked that some Somalis students actually failed because they did not put in the time or effort and chose to excessively party and developed bad habits. We have no statistics on the academic completion rate but the anecdotal information is telling.

The excuse of alcoholism is puerile. The Soviets were known alcoholics, yet they could focus and work hard. Despite their privileged position - of them being foreign students, offered allowances that any soviet envied - they came back home broken and dumber.

Indeed, it takes years to learn how to drink with others. Banning alcohol will just accelerate their urges to drink; but, educating them on the matter of how to consum liquor properly with others, in a social setting, will help Somalis as a whole; we'd become more self-conscious, more mannered and less impulsive.

We are talking about Etiquette and social drinking and Somalis who drink occasionnally.
It's quite a story when people narrate their encounters with drunk Somalis, and this since the early 1960s.
Nobody is talking about Islamic Empires, but Somali Students in Soviet and their perceived bad-behaviors; bad alcoholics, loud, aggressive, not working hard in their studies.
The solutions are either to ban those who'd drink (some were indeed expelled), or, teach them to drink like proper Soviets.
