Yes , Ethiopia was going through extremely hard times but you guys also had a modern military that could be compared with the somali army.Nah, Of course it is not the same as the 2006 but Ethiopia was in worse place to defend itself. Ethiopia was in a civil war, victims estimated from 50k to 700k. You can't also compare the two armies, except the air force, the Soviets supplied the Somali army with modern weapons prior to the war. Ethiopia was caught fully unprepared and with a chaotic government which is kiling each other and in the middle of a civil war. EPRP that was the main rival of the government was highly popular. The government was in disarray when Somalia invaded. In fact Siad Barre's invasion ended the civil war because all Ethiopians stood behind the government when they see an outsider is invading. Mengistu should thank Siad Barre in that.
Both countries were supplied by Soviets, Ethiopia also had yankee equipment from the Haile Selassis era. The soviet and the cuband intervened when they saw that somalia was about to win. Without the Soviet and Cuban intervention Somalia would have won the war, both countries suffered severe casualties and Ethiopia certainly fought well despite many difficulties but Somalia was on a stronger postion untill the Soviet-Cuban intervention. It's a fact. Anyway I'm not trying to be a nationalist here, despite being a supporter of greater somalia I believe Siad Barre did a very risky thing by starting the war and infact our country started to crumble when somalis became disillusioned after the conflict. Many generals turned against Siad Barre specifically because they were disappointed . At the end of day we lost the Ogaden war, no question about it
