I thought of the many ways in which conflict, poverty and natural catastrophes has shifted gender-relations and marital norms in Somalia since the outbreak of the civilwar.

Divorce stigma has not historically been apart of our culture. But it will in the future, not because of some exported misogyny but because of the economy.. Families are now less keen on accepting their daughters (with children) getting a divorce because they are not willing/capable of taking on that financial burden. Gone is the overprotective mother who watches over her daughter like a hawk making sure that she is not being abused, exploited or in other ways mistreated by her spouse.. demanding inuu furo if the marriage is not up to par. Today they are forcing their struggling daughters back into the marital homes that they are attempting to flee from.

What happens when a war breaks out? An upsurge in polygamy. War reduces the amount of men in a country, either through them dying or through male out-migration, suddenly you have a surplus of women in the country. The perfect conditions for widespread polygamy. Polygamy. breeds. dysfunction.

Men have the upperhand. They can now solely set the tone for that marriage using the threat of a second wife. They can demand and get away with pretty much anything as the women are financially dependent on him. She complies and accepts whatever is thrown her way or she is either divorced (losing her source of income) or he marries another (also loses some of her source of income/reduced time spent on her & her children).

All of these conditions lead to the normalization of domestic violence, worse mentalhealth as a result of mistreatment and betrayal. This is our (new) reality.

Even the turkish women who lived in bordertowns faced this when syrian refugees (mainly female) migrated to their towns

Life for women in Somalia today is less than ideal and every study I’ve read has been depressing. Gender dynamics are informed by socio-cultural ideas, and the socio-cultural ideas that are dominant in Somalia today are shaped by our material reality and unfortunately it seems like it is not changing anytime soon.

I think this is why women are making more and more financial demands. Marriage does not guarantee good treatment/outcomes so they ask for outrageous mehers prior to marriage and try to bankrupt him in the courting phase and during marriage just to feel like they are not getting cheated (in this arrangement) and to level out the playing field. He’s also less likely to divorce her after investing his fortunes on her (or so she thinks).

The powerdynamics are not skewed in the favour of women and women are not in a position to demand better treatment nor are they even interested in doing so currently, struggling ppl don’t have the energy nor the time to tackle social issues.

Religious men, who I think should be at the forefront of advocating for better treatment of women are not of much help. Even worse, in every lecture they are trying to introduce and cement social beliefs and ideas that normalize this mistreatment and gaslight women and their perfectly normal reactions. There seems to be zero desire by people with social power to police mens behaviour, they are far more invested in policing womens *reactions*.

Polygamy should be shunned. Polygamy = woman can not monopolize resources for her & children, lack of security/stability in marriage, less parental involvement. In every way it is disadvantegous for a woman and her children

Polygamy also means a subset of men are being left out of reproduction altogether. This plus the increased financial demands of women (that can not be met by many) is creating bitter & hostile disenfranchised men hungry for conflict. They are a threat to womens safety and society as a whole.

Marriage is not expensive for the vast majority in Somalia and most marry relatively easily and young. Polygamy is also normal and halal.

You should instead worry about the "non-sexist" feminist western countries that have popularized prostitution and only fans, family has collapsed, and there is an epidemic of single childless and depressed women.

You are a few decades late with this nonsense, everyone can see the misery it has caused.

Only following Islam and its rules guarantees everyones well being.

Weird that ur trying to derail by talking about the west, im interested in talking about Somalia. And yes, the west is much better for women than any part of the muslim world, it’s silly to even suggest otherwise.

Polygamy is destructive, it being halal is a nonfactor. Lots of things are halal yet we can admit that they are destructive. It is a practise that mainly thrives in socities rife with conflict and poverty.

As for OF and prostitution, the people who usually end up in the sextrade ended up there, nothing unusual there. I’d blame that on capitalism than feminism. Companies and the pro-prostitution lobby co-opted feminism to normalize & profit off of the exploitation of poor/drugaddicted/traumatized women.

Capitalism, liberalism, feminism, atheism, nihilism, etc are all interrelated and stem from the same root. That is why they have appeared together, in the same time, from the same place, Europe. Civil war started right before we really started to educate most of our population. Our country is now packed to the brim with hyper masculine dumbass niggas. most of these niggas either never went to school or only attended for a few years .
