Somalia National 10km Race

A race hosted by Abdi Nageeye (Dutch runner) and Ahmed Muhumed (US runner) to unite Somalis across the peninsula was held this weekend in Jigjiga. Somalis from all 5 points of the star came along to show off their running abilities across a 10km road race.

Fuad a man from Hargeysa won the event. Djibouti 2nd and Hargeysa again 3rd.

In the U20 race, Djibouti came out on top, with Jigjiga coming a close 2nd

I was convinced after summer 2023 Sool marathon where they swept the top 10 and all the running awards πŸƒπŸΏ. We Reer PL couldn’t catch them except a few stragglers. Gobolka waqooyi galbeed especially have exceptional runners. :mjcry:
I think it has to do with the ground elevation level in waqooyi it produces exceptional runners a similar phenomenon exits in Kenya and Ethiopia

PL should train reer gardafuu imo I think that area could produce running talent it’s very mountainous

Yep every place above 1000m elevation level is up north. Ceerigaabo is the highest comfortably at like 1600m. Borama-Hargeisa strip has about 5 towns all of which have high elevation and they produce good long-distance runners if you check their diaspora. Badhan and Hadaaftimo are also pretty high in elevation so warsans might have some untapped potential there too.

Middle distance running (mile, 800) is pure geeljire genetics. The most nomadic areas are probably where the best talent is. Abdi Bile perfect example. 6’3 geeljire long-legged light on his feet all you have to do is coach the rest

@Chaseyourdreamzz habash have the best cheat code they got loads of areas above 2000m elevation I mean even Addis is one of them. They got massive running culture massive talent pool, but they still get washed by geeljire Kalenjins.

Somalis got the best of both worlds alx due to Nilo-Saharan admixture. We need to properly prioritise this sport, scary to think about how many top class runners we’ve missed out on over the civil war

Somalis are naturally gifted long-distance runners and also there was study done about it's correlation to haplogroups, it is more likely these Arsi runners have sizable Somali ancestry.

"Possible patterns between Y-chromosome and elite endurance runners were studied in an attempt to find a genetic explanation to the Ethiopian endurance running success. Given the superiority of East African athletes in international distance running over the past four decades, it has been speculated that they are genetically advantaged. Elite marathon runners from Ethiopia were analysed for K*(xP) which according to the previously published Ethiopian studies is attributable to the haplogroup T

According to further studies, T1a1a* (L208) was found to be proportionately more frequent in the elite marathon runners sample than in the control samples than any other haplogroup, therefore this y-chromosome could play a significant role in determining Ethiopian endurance running success. Haplogroup T1a1a* was found in 14% of the elite marathon runners sample of whom 43% of this sample are from Arsi province. In addition, haplogroup T1a1a* was found in only 4% of the Ethiopian control sample and only 1% of the Arsi province control sample. T1a1a* is positively associated with aspects of endurance running, whereas E1b1b1 (old E3b1) is negatively associated."
