Somalia produces 80% of the world's frankincense.

Are they getting a fair price. When you have a monopoly like this you can create artificial scarcity and drive the prices up like in the diamond industry.

According to the book of Matthew, Chapter 2, Magi, or wise men, followed a bright star in the east to Bethlehem where Jesus had been born:

"And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh" (Matthew 2:11).

Of course the Amharas wanna claim them but we have the largest supply...

Instead of Somalis selling raw materials to these foreign companies that scam them. I think what the Somaliland government should do is establish their own company, plant many frankincense and myrrh trees across Sanaag and lower Saxiil. Diversify the sector by producing frankincense oil, perfumes, cosmetics, and other variety of frankincense and myrrh products. This would boom the economy and provide many job opportunities.

Yes, we do provide nearly all of the frankincense globally but it is also putting a strain on the ecology of the land.

We have less tree coverage than we did in the 1970s and 1980s, this is because of over-exploitation due to the aforementioned frankincense trade as well as the charcoal trade.

A lot of our trees in Somalia are turned into charcoal and sent to the Arabian Gulf states.

One of the major reasons why drought has been getting worse is due to the loss of many trees caused by the charcoal trade. It has destroyed the environment, wiped out the rich wildlife and ecosystem we've once had. However, there has been a discovery in the Sahil area (Sheikh mountains) where they have found a large deposit of high-quality coal.

This could potentially provide an alternative against the usage of charcoal. Somalis can switch to only using coal and export it. This would save the environment and the community can focus on restoring the lost habitats by replanting in large scales.

Isnt it funny how ancient Egyptians depicted a sacred land to somewhere S.East. They referred to it as their ancestral land of Punt, where they use to get their supply of frankincense and myrrh and Europeans out here conveniently pointing their finger at everywhere else except at Somalia as the location of Punt lol.
