You can have a higher GDP per capita but a lower total GDP. Look at China vs European countries.

All it really tells you is how wealthy the average person in the country is.

I'm aware of that bro. The total GDP of a country is irrelevant if the citizens of that country are living in poverty. You don't suppose that Brazil are richer and more advanced than Luxembourg because they have a higher overall GDP, do you? Laakinse both GDP per capita and total GDP are noteworthy depending on the context.
