Somalis were Sufi and Shafi’i for over 700 years, how did Wahhabism/Salafism wipe it out in 2 generations?

I’m bewildered how our nation of 25 million from NFD to Djibouti went from Sufi/Shafi’i to Salafi/Wahhabi between 1990 to 2010, when we have been Sufi/Shafi’i for at least 700 years(Ibn Battuta journey from Zeila to Mogadishu)?

How is this even possible? What happened to Sufi/Shafi’i Sheikhs that existed before 1990? How did they get replaced? How much money did Saudi Arabia pump into spreading their ideology? An ideological change this large in such a short time span across a whole nation is almost unheard of. Now our country will have problems for next 50 years due to this violent ideology.

Sufisim without a good lecturers and stong Islamic philosofical base is weak filled with non islamic acts.

While wahabbism is simple and idiotically take what the early muslims did word by word without thinking.

To revive Sufism without all these grave wroshipping nonsense, you need a good well educated Somali who has a degree in Islamic studies, and has his way with words.

unfortunately most sufism books that are allien with Islamic faith are in Arabic

The war happened, somalis sought refuge in ALLAH swt, unfortunately the state being so weak, radicalisation happened. Also the rise of Al-sheydaan was due to foreign invasion which launched large scale radicalisation.

Also somalis will become less ”radical” in coming years. We will still be conservative, like our ancestors, but not like the salafis. Islam is furthest of Somalias problem, if we would practice it fully we would succeed but no, we don’t.

It’s very intriguing. The two places where Sufism still thrives is where I’m from Dhusamareb and Guriceel. But even then most of the people I know who’ve moved from there to Xamar are not sufi.

A lot of aspects of the Sufism that Somalis followed was filled with bid'aa (innovation). Historically, our ancestors weren't able to read and they might have had a few wondering sheikhs to teach them about the basics of the deen. Hence why, you'd find that lack of hijab, cultural superstitions, bid'aa and even minor shirk and sometimes even major ect was common. Now, we have greater access to knowledge.

We also, need to stop calling everything Wahabi.

It happened around the time of the Afghan- Russian war, many Somalis went to Afghanistan to volunteer where they were trained by the Saudis and Americans.

After the civil war, they came back to Somalia and the Salafi movement was born.

Sufi = Religion + Somali culture
Wahabi = Religion + Arabic culture

we need to seperate culture and religion, easier said than done though, as Somalis religion is engrained in our culture.

I like some Sh who look Wahabi but are honest and say, this is from Somali culture, this is from Arabic culture, and this is Islam.

1. Suffism entered somalia in the year 1799.
2. Wahhabism preceded sufism in somalia.
3. Somali salafis are shaficiyo.

I can't speak about central and southern Somalia, but the Sufis in the north are mostly secluded and rarely reach out to people outside their community. They're poor and they always stay away from politics.

I'd also like to say they have no clear ideology. They think they will enter paradise as long as they follow their scholars.

Wahhabism is a danger to our security for sure. We have extremists willing to blow up governments and citizens because the President didn’t wasn’t extreme enough. Also these people are against women’s rights therefore you will never have a good economy with half the workforce stay at home moms

The government collapsed and the Saudis sponsored a large number of imams. It was easy to discredit the old practices by blaming them for the war

I doubt Sauds spent alot of money.
