I don’t blame them, you’d assume it’s a lack of oral hygiene but the way Somalis use miswak I don’t think it is. Maybe it’s from braces or something and dentist ain’t doing his job properly

It’s a fad. Djibouti was the first Somali region were skin bleaching became popularized back in the late 90s and early/mid 2000s. Nowadays, it’s not as common in Djibouti, and the skin bleaching wave has moved into other parts of Somaliweyn. As people who encounter negative side effects start to pop up more, less people will engage in this practice.

I remember hearing about a girl whose skin on her leg split open after being stepped on while sleeping. Her skin was extremely thinned out after years of bleaching.
