Somalia’s food production this year will, ironically, likely be lower. All this rain is not good for sorghum and flooded maize can only survive for 3 days max. The Gu harvest was poor, and the deyr harvest in Feb will also be poor for opposite reasons. Total 2023 harvest may be 40% below the long term average.
This up and down dynamic is really bad for agricultural development as it discourages farmers.
The lack of a sewage system is a disaster. A lot of these people don't seem to understand that this water is carrying the entire city's waste. It is totally toxic to touch let alone swim in. I can't watch these videos of 7 year old's swimming in floodwaters inside cities, some of them will die.

Gaalkacyo is strange. Despite being in the Ciid region (red soil part of the Horn ie Hawd of DDS, Somaliland and SSC plus Mudug and Galguduud) it still floods. Normally the Ciid rarely floods due to the sandy well drained soil
Galkacyo is on dhoodhi ground. White rocky ground with a high water table. The ciid is just outside the main part of the city. You can see this if you go to google maps’ satellite view.
