Swahili becoming official language of Africa

Mixing unrelated language families is unwieldy.

If Esperanto was solely based on Romance, it would have looked better (like Interlingua does). Mixing Romance and Slavic is just weird.

Many of the language nerds/polyglots don't like Esperanto. It has no future.
You'd be so triggered by my wet dream when I was like 17 of a world language containing words from all the major language families. Afro-Asiatic, Indo-European, Niger-Congo, Sino-Tibetan, Austronesian, Nilo-Saharan, Turkic, Dravidian, Tai-Kadai, Uto-Aztecan... what a beautiful monstrosity it would be.

Yep, if you want to create a conlang, you have to stick to a single language family. Otherwise it will look ugly af and make no sense.

For example, look into Lingwa de Planeta (it mixed Arabic, Mandarin, European languages, Swahili, Hindi). It looks horrendous as a result.

I dunno, walaal, feel like someone with a good ear and sense of taste could pull it off.

I have no idea, don't speak a word of it, besides the Lion King meme phrases. Genuinely don't like it as a language and it has a terrible origin story.

I hope Lingala becomes the Bantu lingua franca and not Swahili. At least Lingala has a nice origin story and emerged as a lingua franca naturally without outsiders interfering with it.

When I heard Swahili the first time, I lowkey thought it sounded funny and primitive. Exposure makes things sound better, eventually.

Lingala sounds better, I think. I have noticed that the far majority of the Congolese I have met in the West speak Swahili and not Lingala (only usually their parents, who also speak French). I have noticed their songs are usually not in Swahili but Lingala.

I hope DRC Congo becomes the SSA superpower.

Nigeria has demographic problems (overpopulation, religious and macro-level ethnic diversity).

Congo lacks macro ethnic diversity (only has micro ones, which can be overcome) and no macro religious diversity either. It also has more natural resources than Nigeria and is underpopulated.

They need to ditch French and unify the country under Lingala.

Congo is a serious giant. So much potential if they could fix the tremendous infrastructure problem and tone down the political corruption.

The brutality of the Belgians (Leopold) can be used as propaganda against French in DRC and to replace it for an African lingua franca. In DRC it will be either Lingala, Kikongo, or Swahili, but I hope they pick Lingala.

Sahelian French countries also have geopolitical issues with France, but weren't treated as brutally like DRC was. More likely French will disappear in DRC than in the Sahel, but hopefully in both places!

Hopefully. French in that part of the world brings with it the perception of prestige. A Congolese able to speak French fluently has the quality of sophistication and is “educated” in that part of the world. Many Congolese even have French names. That has become the norm over the years. Who knows, maybe in the future, people will create a new nationwide consciousness/movement like you mentioned that turns things around.

@The alchemist

In Belgium itself ironically French still has an aura of prestige about it among the Flemish, despite their part of the country being economically more dominant than the French part for several decades now. Many of the Francophone cities in Southern Belgium look like European versions of Detroit (not the demographics, but the economic/rustbelt decline).

Lol, so there's:

- Bad man Leopold.
- Wallonia being the shithole of Belgium.

Pray for DRC they drop French. :dead:

It is not grammatically simple. It has a notorious case system and is harder in this aspect than even German.

I think its phonology/pronunciation sounds childish, not necessarily it being a simple language grammatically.
I don't think it sounding childish has any bearing on its beauty
