Take a look at all the Somali names at the university of Minnesota graduation class this year.

We do 😩. Believe me majority of us have degrees , esp in the medical teaching and engineering fields. The gang bangers a lot of spotlight & overshadow all the good
Yeah even here in Canada we have a lot of Somalis in the medical and engineering fields. I've seen a lot more Somalis going to university at UofA, UTM, UTSGC, Uoft, TMU, York, etc. And when you go on Linkedin I see a lot of educated Somalis on my page both men and women mashallah.

What’s the culture like around ivy leagues over there? Can you not go to an Ivy League for free through the whole way based on merit?

Obvs UK is much smaller with much fewer universities but there’s many people who go from council house to oxbridge you can get sponsored
It depends on what you want to do and also grad school. I don’t think Ivy League matters much if you want to be say a doctor or accountant. Tons of Somali doctors in Minnesota , I know of whole families where all the kids are doctors, 4-5 kids. I think if you want to go to grad school Ivy League might matter more then. Going to Harvard as an undergrad and going to Harvard Business School are two very different things for example. Somalis just need a shit ton of college/university graduates to get average income way up.

Why is this the case?

They are pretty standardized fields in the states(and probably elsewhere) and you also have to take entrance exams that are all the same for both medicine and accounting. Long as you can do well on those and get the grades you’ll be fine. Ivy league is incredibly competitive and expensive. It wouldn’t make any difference if you went to Harvard medical school or Minnesota. I know plenty of Somali doctors that make 250-300k in their first year or two who didn’t go to an Ivy League school.

I’m not saying people shouldn’t try to go, just that for certain fields it isn’t necessary from what I have seen. Ivy League probably makes sense if you want to end up being a CEO or executive of a Fortune 500 company or something. Even then, you need a masters in business from an Ivy League, not just undergrad. It’s probably mostly for the connections with alumni. Usually those guys are mostly engineers too. Kinda biased but they seem to self-select for people they think are really smart and good at math even though it’s probably not necessary for an executive.

Is UoM even good? Why don’t they try to go for Ivy League?
ivy league is 200k for 4 year degree. all the niggas you hear on twitter crying about being 300k student loan debt went to some bs private school when it’s much better to go to a state school.
