The shock was based on two things, one is the very low cost they spent to get Deepseek 6 mil compared to ChatGPT over billions dollars. The second reason is that there were some roumors that they developed GPUs and used it to train Deepseek which sent a message that Nvidia who everyone was pouring billions to get their GPU's is not that important.

With first reason, Deeps seek actually trained its model on ChatGPT, that caused OpenAI calling them out for the theft, despite OpenAI stealing thousands of IP of books and works from the internet.

Second reason; Deepseek actually used Nvidia's GPU ones they had and others they purchased illegally (There are sanction on China). But still they managed to trained a model that is comparable to ChatGPT o1 with few GPUs and made it the model open source anyone can download it.
