The closest group genetically to somalis

War is coming.
Certain Oromos are genetically closest to us than the Rendille. In terms of direct ancestry, it is the Rendille

I think it might be a South Semitic loanword. In both Tigrinya and Amharic the root for it is m-n-t
When it comes to afro-asiatic languages the line of what's a loan and what's common vocabulary inherited from their parent proto language can be blurry at times. It appears to me that mataan is a common word between arabic and somali much like سعى يسعى/soco, رعى يرعى/raac, شبل meaning lion cub and somali shabeel. All these word and more are foundational or elementary in af somali and arabic that were inherited from their common parent language.

Remember that both geez and amharic themselves have loans from other cushitic languages which further complicates the picture. Here is the geez word for twin.

Although somewhat similar it's still different and i haven't seen a proper linguistic derivation leading me to assume otherwise. Furthermore there is no obvious mechanism or narrative alluding to the adaption of the word from ethio-semitic languages into somali, note even the harari language which itself is filled with cushitic loans retains the ethio-semitic form manta, malta so it couldn't have come from it.

Here's a PCA from a recent genetic study focused on Africa. The closest to Somalis are the Gabra, Rendilles, Borana (oromos) , Samburu, Yaaku, and some Orma (oromos).
Then you have two groups:
- one a bit more eurasian made of Bani Hamer (Beja), Habeshas along Oromos clustering with them, Nubians and Northern/Central Sudanese Arab(Kababish...)
-one more SSA(East and/or West African) made of the Burji, Hammer, Sudanese Arab Baggara, Toubou, Ogiek and IIchamus(Maa subgroup like Samburu).

I think all these groups have Cushitic or even Somaloid ancestry (Samburu, Borana...) exept the Toubou whose bulk of eurasian ancestry is more Berber-like than cushitic-like.

Is this due to there being less Bronze Age Semetic migrants as you move further away from the Red Sea ?

What group is the nearest genetically almost identical? Is it afar, habasha or Oromo.
Other east Cushitic groups we split off from.

Our closest is the Saho tribe. But our closest "large ethnic" is Oromo followed by Afar.

Source to the study?

I got some Oromo and Amhara matches on 23andme so it’s most likely I do have some. But I think it is a regional thing more than anything.
Borana Oromos used to have an elaborate system for looking after Somali traders who use to travel freely amongst them. I believe some Somalis were documented to be living with them by the colonialists.
