The Kacaan was the best period in Somali history.

I dont care what anyone says. This was literally the golden era height of Somali unity and mass production of goods & resources which we probably will never see again. Siad Barre made many failures however, I believe his intentions where for the good of Somalia AUN greatest Somali leader. Unfortunately we are now a UN aid colony.

@Abdisamad My sister met a few elderly Cuban lady’s when she worked at a senior home trying to pay for college they told her before Fidel Castro Cuba was one of the wealthiest countries in the region with banks and casinos opening left and right

Today every talented Cuban is in Miami its been 60 years and they haven’t been able to return home sad state of affairs

Communism and socialist dictatorship has never worked in any country they turned Venezuela from a wealthy country into the hell hole it is today
We now know, what breaked Somalia into pieces was the dictators bad and ill advised decision to invade Ethiopia, this against his bigeste allies advice the Soviet union, then when the Somali army was dismantled, he then turned against his own generals and army leaders imprisonening them and assassinating them, why most rebels leaders from Abdullahi Yusuf, Eydiid to Muse bixi are former members of the Somali army, many of them even veterans. Why I would argue we can thank the kacaan for the current condition we are in.. Siyaad Barre did an irreversible damage to the Somali nation, all because he couldn't get himself to pass on the presidential title to someone else who's worthy.

The 1960s civilian government was dysfuctional and corrupt. It actually somewhat resembled the current FGS
This is correct, Siyaad barre was way better than what he become after 1977, he made sure to implement socialist policies (access to education, healthcare, fighting qabyaalad). Our state couldn't fight against kenya or Ethiopia prior to 1969, in few years Somalia took almost all of Ogaden.

True it mirrors it in a lot of ways. The soviets were even hesitant to give aid to Somalia because they previously gave $400 million and no projects actually materialised. The corruption from buying votes and mps was similar to today and it’s what actually brought popular support for siads takeover. Which is why there were no counter coups, the greatest era for Somalia had to be from 1969 to 77. Somalia wasn’t truly communist but socialist, left wing oriented with Islamic and cultural traditions. We didn’t have the atheist and commie block aspects of it. We were progressing a lot and our foreign policy actually mirrored that of Algeria not wanting to become too close to the soviets or Americans. If we continued as we did under the kacaan before 77 war we probably would’ve been in a similar position to Algeria rn. Nationalism was booming we were food self sufficient, had high literacy rates and great social cohesion, the economy was growing and people were generally happy

Somalis were quite irreligious though. My dad told me praying and wearing modest clothing was not as common as it is today
