My friends, it's all in the context. Like other tricolour standards of a similar colour scheme (Italy, Iran, Mexico, Hungary etc.), there's a common theme behind each colour as follows:-
Red: blood, war, and revolution. The indiscriminate cleansing of our people and the struggles to free ourselves from tyranny relates well with the red.
White: peace and reconciliation. The first homegrown/indigenous peace conferences post-civil war began in Somaliland and included all groups/clans. Most notable were the Berbera, Burco, and Borama peace conferences of 1991-1993.
Green: looking into the future/seeking greener pastures. Progress and development is the only way up.
As for the black star, that symbolises the death of the Greater Somalia project (Somaliweyn) since Somaliland is no longer a part of Somalia.
Regardless of how 'ugly' it looks to some, there is a meaning behind the flag.
