On May 15 1990, something of a miracle happened in Mogadishu when 114 intellectual and economic élites consisting of the most brilliant politicians as well as prominent professionals of the nation, issued an manifesto and sent it to Somali dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, urging him to step down in order to salvage the nation from complete collapse.

If only he listened to it. Here it is.

To
: General Mohamed Siyaad Barre

President of the Somali Democratic Republic

Mogadishu

Subject: Recommendation Aimed at Bringing About National Reconciliation and Salvation

We, the undersigned elders, who took part in the national struggle for independence – sultans and chiefs of the Somali Communities from the various regions, religious leaders, businessmen, intellectuals and others – strongly and unanimously feel that we can no longer remain passive spectators, nor ignore the duties and responsibilities that we owe to our people and our country, both from Somali and Islamic points of view, given the sufferings, the bloodshed and the incalculable loss of life and property that our people have suffered for so long; as well as all the consequent unforeseeable and negative repercussion and risks that these may result vis-à-vis our national integrity and security.

Among others things, we are deeply disturbed by:

THE CIVIL WAR:

  1. The civil war ranging between the government forces and the opposition movements which has caused unlimited disaster to our motherland, not only militarily but also politically, economically, socially, morally, and materially- to the point of making us feel ashamed of ourselves as Somalis as well as being made pessimistic about our future.
  1. The killings of tens of thousands of innocent civilians including: the aged, women and children as well as the destruction and looting of their properties.
  1. The fleeing of hundreds of thousands of people from their homes because of fear for their lives which compelled to seek refuge in other countries like Ethiopia and Kenya.
The destruction and looting of major cities and towns including: Hargeisa, Burao, Shiekh, Erigavo, Buhodle, Galkaio, Galdogob, Do'ol, Wargalo, Hilmo and its surrounding hamlets, Afmadow, Liboya and Bada'de. To our shock and dismay, most of the wells and water reservoirs on which, because of the and nature of our land, the very existence and the life of the nomads and their livestock so much depend were deliberately destroyed as punitive measures.

Rip professor abyaan who signed this letter and yet was killed in Mogadishu by usc the city was burning for 25 years it really got the karma it derserves

If only Siad stepped down (aun) I wonder where Somalia would stand today.

You guys are hella' depressing, it's like you're all stuck in the past or something.
It's either posts about the 'Civil War', '1990' or 'What Siad Barre could've done in the Ogaden war'.

What happened has happened, we need to look to the future a decide what's best to resolve the current situation.

It is depressing. But i cant see where we are going. I dont know what to expect in future. Somalia that we knew in the past is going to be very different than the new somalia that we are going to see in future. Somalia wont recover.

Sayid barre wasnt a qabilist but those cronies around him made him into one.

Siad Barre (AUN) once gathered people and buried a stick with white cloth rapped around it. This signified the collapse and end of Qabil. He was never a Qabilist and gave jobs to Midgan people. But the people around him influenced and changed his perspective on Qabil. When he took power he arrested Abdullahi Yusuf (AUN) and Farah Adiid (AUN), he released them during the Ogaden war, and you could say they revived Qabil.

Siyad bare did not destroy Somalia he developed it. Warlords and savages destroyed what he and the middle income Somali people built that era. So instead of blaming the dead guy why not blame the savages the were actually the true cause?

Siyad Barre was the reason we are in this predicament. He and his cronies used qabil to further nepotism and favoritism. and Thus received what they deserved.
