Most American soldiers are people who need money or students who didn't want to get crippled by debt but instead got crippled by an explosion. American soldiers are thus naturally cowards as they aren't fighting for a just cause. Taliban fighters don't fear death. Furthermore without air support they would not have gotten an inch of land.
