Thoughts on parents making adult children pay rent to them?

I saw some debate on twitter recently where cadaan people were saying adult children should pay rent to their parents if they live with them, while timojilec and others from immigrant backgrounds were saying that they don’t pay anything because their parents actually love them lmao

I don’t see the problem with contributing a few hundred if you live at home but parents behaving like landlords to their children and charging close to market rent is absolutely insane imo. What are your thoughts?

I'll pay for water and Internet which is 200 but besides that they can kick rocks. I've got my own bills like school.

I've got cousins who are all 19 n above and they pay Edo like a few hundred each just to help out their mum but that's it. Not really rent.

Timo jileec mortgages are usually paid off by the time their kids have full-time jobs post-graduation, usually thanks to multiple working adults like relatives or grandparents saving costs (daycare, cooking, renting a room). The situation is different.

Never had to pay rent or any bills when I lived with my parents.

I would have been pissed off I did tbh. Ive heard stories about educated Somali men and women having to send their parents money just to pay rent and other bills each month :susp: .

Definition of gaajo. You failed as a parent if you have to depend on your kids to help pay bills.

Edit:
no offense to anyone in this situation. I just don't f*ck with it. I feel like most adults shouldn't have to worry about financially taking care of their parents as soon as they start working.

I've literally never heard about this being discussed until I started interacting with Madows online.

That cadaan guy in the tweet surprised me too. Especially since most middle/upper class Cadaans in north america aren't expecting their kids to help pay bills :mjlol: . Asians and a decent amount of Africans are like this as well in my area.

If they finished school and are working. Then they should pay some bills to help out and to learn some responsibilities.

Women are the responsibility of the father until they get married, so they don’t need to. However if you are a grown ass man, you should be paying.

I would even say men should start contributing to the house the minute they get a job which should be soon as soon as possible. Teaches independence and forward thinking.

Some Somali parents do it too. My parents did it to me lmao. $1000 per month.

Part of the reason why I moved out. If I’m paying thousand in rent I may as well have my own place
This is crazy :dead: .

Nigga only poors do this :susp: . Let's call it how it is. Most kids from middle/upper class households literally don't have to worry about helping their families pay bills.

I saw that tweet Jamila was talking about. Literally tons of Africans, Asians, and Arabs were saying they didn't have to pay for shit.

Anyone not megarich is cautious at the moment, nigga come back to reality. Inflation has doubled the prices of many essential food items. Groceries have become very expensive. Im standing on business, it should be mandatory for men to chip in if they live at home.

I saw the debate on twitter also. Many of the cadaans were rich, but they still helped out their parents. These kids have love towards their parents. Im on their side. Dumb POCs flexing that they leech of their parents while cadaans show that they are hardworking folks who want to contribute.

If you were to ask a ordinary somali parent this they would be horrified,
Paying rent as a deterrent to living with them, that is completely foreign to not only somali culture but practically any non white culture.
However I need to make a big exception, now sometimes if you have your job and such you also have a duty to help your parents pay with some bills here and there, of course not as a rent but just general help. Especially if you are not very well off. Like pitching in, paying for your phone bill, insurance portion of the electric and gas bill. Thats normal and dosent apply here.

So difference is one is used as a deterrant while the other is general help towards your parent, that will continue even after you stop living with them.. Thats my take

As long as ive been working ive paid the car insurance, property tax, internet, and gas. However its not forced like if i dont pay my parents wont kick me out lol but its just common sense tht since i live here i should be paying. Most somali kids give their parents money so its the norm
