I can just imagine--- Hawiye Girl ---Swipe----Oromo Chica with 11 toes, Swipe--- Diana creme queen swipe

Lol no one would use it because Somalis fear each other more than they fear anything else lol.

Somalis need a professional matchmaker like the Asian lady on that netflix show. Preferably a middle-aged woman who is in a successful marriage. There is a gap in the market for a good matchmaker in the diaspora.

Not an APP which will be infiltrated by losers and foreigners.

Serious question.

You don't have permission to view the spoiler content. Log in or register now.

I don't see the issue with this. Contrary to popular belief, there are regional differences in culture, even if small.

That's what Asians do when they get matched by a match-maker, they have a "CV" with their information on it. They have their

ethnic and 'caste' information
education
career
height
religion
preferences

Nah can't back this, respectfully. Most of my friends since childhood have been South Asian and they would be extremely offended.

For most South Asians individuals, there is no problem between Pakistanis and Indians, they focus on their similarities rather than their differences. Many date between religions in their diaspora and do not have anywhere near the same type of division we do. Caste is almost irrelevant in their youth diaspora.

Sima aunty (the lady you mentioned) is practically a meme. She is a symbol of a rapidly ageing relic of Desi culture.

The problem, similar to Somalia, has been politics. People in power that never cared about the average man picking fights with one another using divisions such as religion and caste (qabiil and region for Somalia) to advertise to their respective masses.

That is a problem considering the fact that Asians are diverse. They speak different languages, are of different heritages and many of them having different religions. The same can never be said for Somalis considering the fact that we are mostly one ethnic group, one language and alhamdulliah, one religion.

We're population wise actually pretty small so I don't understand why people would want to limit their options even more, when a person who is a great match for you could be from a different qabil/ region.

Most Somalis are quite similar but then you have Somalis from minority groups who speak different languages and different customs. I know a lady that was married to an CadCad mixed with Somali family and she was discriminated against on some levels.

Some Somalis are mixed with or adopted Bantu customs, and think twerking in public is ok. I know this seems trivial to some, but there will be cultural clashes.

I think with ethnic Somalis what's most important to check is work ethic, class and religiosity.
Also, sometimes, some families experienced civil war trauma and don't want to upset their parents by bringing some people home.

At some point, as Somalis, we should treat and openly talk about our clan backgrounds as if it's a surname, because that's what it actually is. The more we treat it as a tabboo and try to bury it, the more insidious it becomes.

I think after Somalia becomes stable, we need a reconciliation tribunal similar to South Africa's but learn of their clear mistakes.

This will allow every qabiil to say their piece, allow for the people to judge and prosecute necessary villians. After that, we should move on from qabiil and let it become a distant second to somalinimo.

Whenever, I went back to Somalia (esp PL), I realised that we in the diaspora care more about qabiil than them. It was very normal to see someone cross between PL and Galmudug or to visit Hargeisa without much trouble.

That confused me until I realised that for most people back home, qabyaalad and governance is irrelevant. They want to live in peace and have food on the table everyday. For us, our parents left Somalia scarred from tribal conflict and have not made peace with it yet.

It’s a shithole country, don’t sugar coat it. Small population, same language, same religion, same culture, same look. It’s insane how division even exists.

I do not want to derail this thread but I'll respond to you sxb, cos you raise a good point. Sorry if it is too long.

Division usually exists because it is the best way to conquer. When colonisers arrived to Africa, it was easy to divide societies on ethnic or linguistic lines, simplifying their process of domination. Somalis were tough, because of all the factors you listed. Many British scholars at the time noted the difficulty for Somalis to accept subjugation.

Then some brilliant bastard realised that Somalis like Arabs or Europeans have some tribal divisions and used this to divide the populace. However, it still took until the 1920's for Somalia to become fully colonised.

This eventually led to Kacaan system, in which one man controlled everything and pitted tribes against each other in order to distract from his dictatorship. When this man left, the society that was based on his control collapsed, everything disappeared except for the divisions he sowed.

P.S Don't get me wrong, qabyalaad always existed but the toxic qabyalaad we know today came from the scramble of Africa.

P.P.S One might say, Ethiopia is more divided yet the cadaan could not exploit it for colonisation. However, Ethiopia was a christian nation in a period where colonisation occured ostensibly to preach Christianity to the African masses, as it was the white mans burden.
