Wadnaha Dhexe: Government of Canada commits to new culture and recreation centre for the Somali community in Toronto​

Toronto, Ontario, March 1, 2025 — Today, the Honourable Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, announced a federal investment of $20 million for the Somali Centre for Culture and Recreation in Toronto through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program.

This project will support the construction of a net-zero emissions facility that will address the needs of Toronto’s Somali community and provide social, cultural and recreational services to residents in the surrounding area. When complete, the centre will be more than 100,000 square-feet and include spaces for fitness, sport, art, dance, music and social services such as newcomer support.

The federal government recognizes the importance of community spaces and remains committed to strengthening and revitalizing Canadian communities, ensuring we remain connected through common interest and shared spaces.

Most of our families fled the 77 war and the Somali civil war with nothing, so they leaned on each other to survive. They’d lost so many loved ones that, in a way, they started building a new family. I remember growing up, we’d all go to the same soccer leagues and dugsis, and because of the bonds my parents formed from fleeing and these events, I now have Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Nieces/Nephews from all over — North, South, Galbeed, Djibouti and NFD — who aren’t related to me by blood but are family all the same.

It is supposed to be at some park but some NIMBYs asked for it to be put in another empty area near the park. They brought Doug Ford involved since he also lives near the area and represents the riding. It's been years of NIMBYs not wanting it in the middle of the park.
