He has been winning elections for the last 13 years, since 2004. Of course he will lose popularity with every election. But there is no option aside from Erdogan becaus he politically decimated his opponents, he plays them against each other.

Difference is the United States has an independent judicial system, check and balances, government can't just detain tens of thousands of political opponents just cause they want to. They're not even comparable.
