Pre 1977 Barre was agruably the greatest Somali leader ever. Plus his cabinet had people from all areas of the country and were chosen by merit.

After 1977 there were purges of civil servants who were replaced by relatives of Siad Barre and the country turned into a corrupt family run government. It was even worse than how things are now.

These leaders nowadays are small fish when it came to government corruption compared to 1980s Somalia. The students never surpassed the master :siilaanyolaugh:

that's not wholly true, mengistu never said any such things. Mengistu fled with his tail between his legs because the rebels were at Addis before the talk even got far. Ethiopia and Ethiopians have never not had a government which is why it can never collapse.

He never said it said it but I read the declassified papers where the US ambassador pleaded with him and he listened. They also pleaded with Barre and the man aloof.

I remember reading somewhere thatwhen the USC were at the gates of Xamar Maslah Mohamed Siyaad looted the entire central bank and ran to Kenya.

The money was to be used to establish the Kacaan colony in Columbus Ohio

Tbh if it wasn't for Mohamed Ibrahim Egal Somaliland would have been in the same situation as Somalia.

Don't forget that he was a nomad till his early teens. He ran away from his parents and came to the city.

Nope his father passed away and was raised by his widow mum as nomads. Being orphan, barre gave extra care to Somali orphans and built for them the orphanage town. The orphan girls got priority in nursing jobs. Males always joined army or some got scholarships. (My mum told me that). Barre was pro women's rights for being son of widow (single mother).

Mangistu told mediators when the rebels reached the gates to the capital that he will go into exile and that the rebels should not destroy the country.

Siyad Barre instead refused every mediations and allowed the country and the institution to collapse and made people to turn to their qabiil for pure survival, thus leading us to kill each other.

Siad left the country on 26th of January. In the years/months that followed his departure, hawiyes were fighting each other in Xamar, Daroods fighting each other in Kismayo and Isaaqs annihilated each other in Berbera and Burco. You can't blame him for that.
