If you’ve seen the news, there is a recent rape and child marriage case in Carmo, Puntland, Somalia, where a Somali man sold his 8-year-old daughter into marriage with an older man after her mother passed away. The rapist held her captive in his house for six months, subjecting her to repeated abuse. It was only recently, when a woman posted about it on social media, that the public became aware of the situation.
For this child to receive justice, will the following take place?
- Will her father be imprisoned for life?
- Will her rapist face the death penalty?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Somali women and girls are cursed by being born in this country. The only form of justice they can hope for is sharing these stories on platforms like tiktok or appearing in Dahir Calasow’s live court. What’s the use of the FGS and these Western NGOs if they won’t protect Somali children?
