Why do you think our ancestors called them timo-jileec (soft/straight hair)? I think a lot of these old and colloquial Somali terms were coined to single out the one trait that most sharply distinguished others from us and, to some extent, also other groups. For SSAs and Indians—especially the further south you go with the latter—it was hair texture. For cadaans, it was skin tone. For East Asians, the epicanthic folds. I honestly think Somalis always saw something familiar in various Desis and felt, “They’d look a lot like us… if not for the hair.” which further jibes with how straight-haired Somalis often get jokingly called "Hindi" within the community.

There's a different allele they and I think the Aboriginal-like groups originally native to South Asia have that creates a different hue of brown in them, from what I remember reading.

Or maybe it came from the Iranian admixture cos I've noticed people toward Iran and Iraq in the Middle East also look a little different in hue from Arabians, Levantines and Egyptians; there's a "glow" or rather a lean toward "redishness" the latter group has when they tan that the Iranians don't or have less of in my experience.
