Dont be Al Shabab
Avoid filthy Puntland tap water
Always pay your bribes in full
Beware of the odd exotic animal somalis constantly tie to hotel gates
Have fun
God speed Akhi

How long would you be there? Are u being sent there for Dhaqan celis

My advice to you would be to respect the local culture and way of doing things.

Somethings might not make sense to you especially coming from the west, but keep an open mind.

Bring alot of Lacag with you too. It would make ur time there easy.

I remember when I went back to Africa at the age of 16. My granny took 3 siblings and I to Puntland with her. It was 4 days after our summer break started. My brothers were nervous as heck, that was the year most of their friends "moved away" but in reality they were sent to Africa. My older brother even went as far as saying I'm not going anywhere, my dad assured us all we were coming back, we were only accompanying ayeeyo to Africa. Anyways I was excited, I packed my bags 2 weeks prior. My sister and I stocked up on candy that we knew we wouldn't find in Africa. Our first stop was Atlanta, GA. We had a 5 hour layover. We thought we were balling because ayeeyo let us shop in the duty free store for make up, perfumes and purses. Oh boy was she mad when we called her over to pay for the stuff. My ayeeyo, sister and younger brother were all seated together, I was stuck in between my brother and this older gentleman. Although the old guy offered me his window seat and I quickly accepted. We reached Dubai around midnight, my uncle was waiting for us at the Airport, picked us up and took us to his condo, we stayed with him for a week, he spoiled us rotten. Then the real journey came along. The day we went to Puntland. Our first stop was Bosaaso. I'm not even exaggerating when I say we had 7 cars full of people welcoming us. Kisses and hugs from relatives we didn't know. My awoowe (ayeeyo' younger brother) welcomed us with hugs and kisses. It was hot, humid and I was tired. I remember sleeping for 15 hours. Thank God Ayeeyo's house had AC all around the house. The locals were nice but they would make fun of you in a heart beat if they see you slipping. Fresh fish everyday, that's where my love for seafood grew. At night my great uncle (awoowe) would tell us about his childhood, stories about our ancestors. I truly enjoyed that vacation. I also met Canadian Somalis and we found out we were related, we still keep in touch up to this day. If I could do it, I would do it all over again.

Good luck with your travel.

lol try your best to not stand out. You'll still standout and people will stare. It all depends on where you go, some areas are more familiar with diaspora than others. Since your going to Puntland, anytime you see a xalwo kismaayo drop in. They have good cocktails and xalwo/deserts.

Where are you landing? it's better to land straight in Galkayo, Garowe or Bosaso. If you land in Hargeisa or Mogadishu, they will act up as soon as they hear your accent so that you have to bribe them.

Just be you. You will stand out like a sore thumb as it is. Don't mind the bad roads, crowded 'taxis', tea thats too sweet, food thats too salty: take it like a man. Avoid eating outside your family's house as much as you can, or you might risk food poisoning. And please don't leave your gadgets like laptop and smart phone at home, they will notice it and might be offended. Take it with you, everyone has a smartphone nowadays, and if someone has the audacity to ask you for your stuff just say no. Lastly, negotiate on everything you buy even water bottles. Kindness is seen as weakness over there.

If you have the possibility to go to baadiyaha, do not hesitate and go.

Yes it is safe, but I got sick and so did my co-travelers, but we didn't get sick at the same time or from the same place. So the risk of minor food poisoning is substantial.
